(St. Louis Post-Dispatch) Democrats will choose between a former assistant Missouri attorney general and a former federal prosecutor in the Aug. 4 primary to decide who will challenge Republican Attorney General Eric Schmitt this fall.
(The Roanoke Times) Chuck Smith, a Virginia Beach lawyer who unsuccessfully ran for attorney general in 2017, is running again to be Virginia’s top lawyer. Smith, a Republican, officially announced his bid Wednesday, becoming the second candidate in the 2021 election. Del. Jay Jones, D-Norfolk, is also running for the post. Either would be the state’s first Black attorney general.
(WISHTV.com) Former U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita was selected as the Indiana Republican Party’s nomination in the attorney general race. Rokita was chosen as nominee over sitting Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill Jr., Decatur County Prosecutor Nate Harter and Indianapolis attorney John Westercamp.
(News Tribune) The two Democratic attorney general candidates Missouri voters will see on the Aug. 4 primary ballot are both from St. Louis and both want to have expanded or at least fulfilled roles for the state’s top lawyer when it comes to accountability for law enforcement.
(The Spokesman-Review) The difference four years makes in Washington elections is probably most obvious in the state attorney general’s race. Four years ago, Republicans couldn’t muster an opponent to Democrat Bob Ferguson in his first re-election campaign. Ferguson easily defeated Libertarian Joshua Trumbull, his only challenger in the primary and general that year.
