On November 6, 2018, AG Hawley (R) won the U.S. Senate race over incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill (D). AG Hawley submitted his letter of resignation effective January 3, 2019.

On November 13, 2018, Governor Mike Parson (R) appointed State Treasurer Eric Schmitt (R) as Missouri’s next AG. Schmitt will serve the remainder of AG Hawley’s term which expires in January 2020. Schmitt was elected State Treasurer in November 2016 with more votes than any other State Treasurer in Missouri history. Prior to his election, he served two terms in the Missouri State Senate, representing parts of St. Louis County.
